Grown-up Ryanair is still the leader

First dividend points the way for the budget airline to maintain its dominance in the market

The horsemen of the apocalypse are to be regularly found in the departure lounge. Not a year goes by without war, pestilence and economic famine afflicting the aviation industry. Sometimes, as in recent times, they all come at once. The horsemen might be paying extortionate fees for baggage, priority booking and allocated seating these days, but you do wonder why any sane investor would take a long-term punt on an airline.

The end of this week, however, sees one reason, maybe, for joining the share register of Ryanair. If, by Friday, you are holding stock in Europe’s busiest carrier, then you will qualify for Ryanair’s first ever dividend payout, which is scheduled for next month.

The airline, whose shares are listed on Euronext and the
